The County Schools Challenge

This week I wanted to share information on The County Schools Challenge.

It is a partnership project that is run across secondary schools in Northamptonshire. I know that, strictly speaking, we are primary school specialists but this is such a positive project that I had to share it with you all!

Each year, secondary schools across Northamptonshire are given an important social issue to discuss, raise awareness of and develop ways in which they can help to address the issue. Members of Northamptonshire’s public services also set up workshops for secondary school students to give valuable information on the wide range of social issues that they cover.

Previous years have focussed on road safety, drugs education, healthy relationships, staying safe online, and alcohol harm to name a few; But this year the theme is knife crime.

Mostly, the challenge is aimed at pupils in Year 8 or Year 9 who will need to create, develop and present their final solution to their themed issue to a panel of judges at a ““Dragons’ Den” style semi-final and grand final.

It’s such a brilliant idea, as it really allows the pupils to get involved in understanding some of the many social issues that present to us in modern day society. Not only that, but it helps to build confidence and teamwork whilst understanding about budgets and undertaking research.

Why should your school take part?

“Previous winning schemes have received funding and have been rolled out across the county, and in some cases, shared worldwide. The 2015/16 winners were featured on BBC Look East for their Healthy Relationships project.”

Unfortunately, the closing date for this competition was 10th May 2019 however, the County Schools Challenge takes place every year, with schools having to register their interest.

To be considered for next year’s intake, follow Northamptonshire County Schools Challenge on Twitter and Facebook for the latest information and details of how you can apply.
