Why choose us?

The Staff Room is the region's only specialist Primary supply teaching agency, covering Northamptonshire and South Leicestershire.

First for primary teaching jobs in Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes

Teaching Assistants and SEN Staff

The Staff Room work with mainstream primary and specialist schools providing Teaching Assistants (TA's) for general classroom support, 1:1 support and more specialist SEN supporting roles.

Classroom Teaching Assistants
Class TA's help the class teachers carry out the lessons plans they have created and contribute to learning objectives in the classroom. The role can vary a lot in regards from school to school, class to class and from day to day.

TA's may be asked to work with small groups or individuals with more targeted assistance to allow them to progress quickly, sometimes a teaching assistant may be asked to take the whole class (although in theory this should only be HLTAs). Other duties may include hall and lunch time supervision and assisting with the preparation of the classroom.

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assitants
SEN TA's work within mainstream and special needs schools either supporting the class teacher or working on a one to one basis with a particular child. To work as a SEN TA you would need to have general TA experience or have experience working within an SEN childcare environment.  It would also be benefical if you are Team Teach trained.

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Contact us today if you are a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) and looking for either day to day, short to long-term or permanent opportunities.  We are always looking for HLTA's to fill a variety of vacancies.

FAQ's

What qualifications do I need to become a Teaching Assistant?
To work as a classroom TA we require a minimum of 6 months experience (in the last 5 years) supporting children in a childcare environment.  You must also hold GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths. You do not need to have any formal qualifications to work as a TA but there are a number of nationally recognised qualifications for teaching assistants that are available. Contact you local college for details.

What other things do I need to know? How quickly can I start to work?
Anyone that wants to work in schools has to go through a thorough background checking process that include a criminal records check from the Disclosures and Barring Service (DBS) and references from previous employers. If you have a current DBS check in place and your referee's respond straight away you can potentially be out to work the same week. On average it takes around 2 weeks to clear for work, often quicker, but occassionally longer if we have difficulties getting references or if there is a delay with the DBS.
